i have 2009 mac pro 4.1 8 core 2.93ghz nvidia geforce gtx 285. have 24gb ram in it
use photoshop, lightroom, after effects , premier pro, of time more 1 @ time.
don't feel i'm getting performance out of should be. there time when using multiple filters in lightroom gives me spinning wheel , takes few seconds kick in. in after effects stalls out working in 3d space.
upgrading video card process or thing can take ram way 32, plan on doing either way.
can't afford quadro fx4800 @ moment, radeon 5870, or other card, of upgrade? should wait till can afford quadro?
help!
i highly doubt gpu culprit, you're describing.
photoshop , lightroom both make limited use of gpu. while effects (mostly 3rd-party plug-ins) may use gpu acceleration, of photoshop/lightroom cpu , memory bound. if you're running other things in background premiere , after effects, watch memory footprint well. both programs hog ton of ram if tell them to.
in ae, have play around memory , multiprocessing settings until find works setup. contrary might think, using available processing cores in ae doesn't yield best performance because set amount of ram must assigned each processing core. starving core of ram in ae worse telling use less cores, more ram per core. ideally, want bare minimum of 2gb, , 4gb on more complicated compositions, per processing core. on nehalem xeons, ae see 8-core machine 16-core machine because of hyper threading. yes, uses lot of ram. still feel ae more sluggish should on 16gb of ram.
on 2008 8-core, find setting 4 cpus (cores) 2gb each in ae gives me decent performance, while leaving enough ram free have other things running in background without system slowing down crawl page-outs when cmd-tabbing other applications. again, ymmv. fiddle around settings see works best you.
side note, i've found windows version of ae doesn't have near many unexplainable stutters , slowdowns in normal operation mac version does. can't pinpoint causes this, can assume adobe spent lot more time optimizing ae's performance in windows. lesser extent, premiere pro exhibits similar behavior me.
