Updating OS on Apple TV 2 fails - "An error occurred."

i'm trying update parents atv2 latest os every time somewhere in middle of step 1 (after has downloaded it) rather unhelpful message, "an error occurred" , ok prompt. hitting ok takes start of having redownload again. happens repeatedly. first time i've had trouble updating os. suggestions?
