3gs Wifi not in list!!

hi folks , in advance.

after years of avoiding mac products reasons unclear me, got ipad last month , result, have got hands on iphone 3gs. can't afford 4 yet maybe in while.

problem i'm having reason when go settings switch on wifi...it's not there. doesn't feature in list. have 'airplane mode', 'notifications' , 'carrier' before going on sounds etc.

missing something? please help.
