- david graham (big brother), apple's 1984 commercial
read it. don't care if it's tldr. read , tell me isn't we're heading. read , tell me you're not mindless skinhead sitting in pew staring @ big brother in awe, totally slack jaw. read , tell me apple didn't foretell own future in advert, , we're not steaming towards virtual equivalent of depicted same people sought create computer market full of creation , freedom.
difference between 1984 , 2012 there's no athletic heroine running down hallway swing giant hammer , toss through screen. nobody coming save time. there no light washing on in sudden burst of shattered glass , wind.
i've brought "the new apple" several times in forum , astounds me how many people willing go along way things heading. baffled @ newfound attitude of "well can workaround , adopt new , totally different mindset , workflow... once you've done , you're willing anything- literally meagre grasp on once had, doesn't seem bad!".
makes no sense. people willing stand , fight freedoms threatened things sopa, pipa, , acta. apple continues head towards utopian ios unification of computing, hear crickets , mindless blabbering of brainwashed believing it's better them- once pain caused steel rod of forced change being rammed through mind subsides , euphoria sets in, it'll ok.
lot of people, bought apple long time ago. owned apple ii, 512k, quadra, several powermacs, , switched next (a turbo dimension board- still got sitting in original shipping boxes , fire serve wonderful reference point we've been , now). watched steve jobs kicked out, sat , saw jlg split found beos inc , had bebox @ 1 point in time (wonderful computers, nice see haiku picking torch). @ wwdc in crowd when amelio trotted out jobs first time since exile , quite remember standing ovation seemed last hours.
i've used practically every mac os released, sos macos 1.0 through 9.2.2. mac os x server 1.0 (not 10.0- archaic pre-aqua release based on rhapsody) mac os x 10.0 through 10.6.8.
every single step of way have perpetually felt moving towards "better". every successive release of each apple product i'd purchased breath of fresh air. walls of computing fading away off distant horizon, , after time came realize depend on apple right thing, they'd never abandon me , they'd never let me down (no not rickroll).
recently, though, feel if sun has been setting on apple. bright white future offer has turned dark , gloomy dystopian future i'm forced accept hand holding, i'm instructed take seat on pew in 1984 commercial , listen big brother has week. once felt spacious retreat of freedom feels claustrophobic encasement of elevator (sorry, think correct term "security sandbox").
, don't it.
want love apple because have before. computing has never been abrasive me because using apple tech has been 1 of delightful experiences i've ever had. can snow leopard better leopard, leopard better tiger, panther, jaguar, puma, cheetah, , hera. macos 9 better macos 8, going original floppy booting systems when didn't have gigabytes of disk space fill bloated code email client can animate creation of new message.
don't mind apple going, if had choice. "but have choice!", fanboys inevitably scream. "you can stay on xyz forever! don't have upgrade!". right, tell users couldn't sync iphone n (where n between 1 , infinity) because itunes wasn't date, , latest version required requires entirely new operating system.
halting passage of time not solution, temporary stopgap. sooner or later present catch you, , if doesn't- you're technological hermit living off in cave somewhere laptop still boots mac os 8 (woo appearance manager! remember times?).
don't know think. don't appreciate being badgered , belittled company has been major sinkhole personal finances since apple ii. want choice. that's all.
when did choice become 4 letter word? when did apple decide knew best all?
have sworn "think different".
not "think indifferent".
