Time machine question — recovery of specific files

i got new mac , have question regarding getting files off of time machine backup previous mac. i'd prefer give new mac clean install , specific school files classes , maybe few other things copy stuff (applications , all) new mac.

possible after clean install connect old time machine , grab few files before wiping , setting time machine new computer?

yes can this. take @ screenshot attached see how navigate through backup folder scheme. note on last step, navigate "latest" alias, open correct date's folder you. once can see macintosh hd, users folder in machd>users>username.
