Getting rid of "other" data

i have iphone 4 , running ios 5.0.1.

synced iphone imac last night , went expected, except 1 thing. in itunes, iphone says there lot of "other" data taking substantial amount of memory. how breaks down:

audio - ~7.1gb
photos - ~5.0gb
apps - ~4.0gb
books - ~<1gb
other - ~5.0gb
free - ~6.7gb

have noticed when click on "sync" "free space" goes 6.7gb 11.1gb , "other" bar shrinks goes "normal" after sync finishes. have checked usage pane in iphone's settings , checks out except "other" data. have restarted iphone , still showing 6.7gb free in preferences.

aside deleting data , apps , restoring iphone, ideas on how can solve issue?

 

the other data comprised of icloud documents, ios ota update data, stock app caches, text messages, mms pictures , videos, safari web data, system caches, things downloaded not yet transferred itunes, , many more smaller files. way temporarily rid of data restore iphone, return.
