MacBook Pro 17" (A1297) - Keyboard backlight dimmer than when first purchased

my keyboard backlight dim. can see bit of light through keys, it's functional, it's uniformly more dim when first bought , more dim 13" 2011 mbp keyboard backlight. ideas?

 

have tried changing brightness of keyboard backlight?

f5-f6 on top of keyboard this.
