Upgrade Snow Leopard to Lion... tips, advice?

ok, i've got imac, guess late 2009 edition. intel core 2 duo 3.33 ghz, 8 gb ram, ati hd 4670. it's running great, has snow leopard on it. other builtin software, use ms office, dreamweaver cs4, , fetch.

i'm looking upgrade lion can keep up, , can install imessage beta (which yeah guess i'll upgrade mountain kitty update don't care upgrading i'm feeling left behind announcement of mountain cat/lion/whatever.

anyway, i've never done upgrade on mac before. need special before upgrade? i've got time capsule , it's been backing months don't need up.

tips or tricks me upgrade process? read should make dvd/usb copy of lion after download, before upgrade.

i "upgraded" lion , looking external drive clone to, erase , reinstall sl. can lion 10.7.3 experience "it doesn't work." sl it's at.
