LDAP Client Setup with Ubuntu LDAP server

first of all, new.

first asked question on @ [h] forums reply got post here. not familiar macs. use redhat/centos/ubuntu , win7 on daily basis.

intro:

have ubuntu server running ldap server in our lab. ldap clients include redhat computers, centos computer , ubuntu machines. unfamiliar how whole arrangement setup capable of retreiving information such 'ssl turned on' kinds of things ldap.conf

purchased imac , have setup such can have ldap authentication going on computer used many in lab. has mac os 10.7.3.

have searched , find lot of info forcing binding, ldap setup active directory (not ldap), , start off "setup ldap did in snow leopard.... "

so, question is, have guide or know-how on how can ldap client authentication working. have tried many things turning on , off ssl, trying figure out advertised information our server. whatever try, error in form of "could not establish connection" sort of thing. don't think firewall issue figured out how set ldap on ubuntu 10.04 @ home.
