Is the only point of the retina display to make text sharper

i under impression since new ipad has such high screen resolution, able fit more information on screen. similar how 13 inch macbook air can fit more items/text on screen versus 13 inch mbp because mba has higher resolution. thought case since apple brags resolution higher 1080p. disappointed today when used ipad 2 next ipad 3 safari , although text noticeable sharper on new one, both displayed exact same content @ different resolutions. question on whether or not perk of having retina display on ipad display sharper text. also, retina display make easier read in sunlight on new ipad? in advance!

it possible fit more information on display - depends on developer. suppose that, safari, apple decided zoom in because otherwise these small pages.
