Should I return my iPad?

so noticed ipad has 2 dead pixels both of them on oppisite side of screen. wondering if should go through hassle of returning it. cause read when people return ipads of them worst 1 replacement. should exchange new ipad?

i would. dead pixels definite, identifiable defect.

unless feel comfortable living them on device spent quite bit of money on, return it.

WHOIS command not working

i've got intel i3 imac , did fresh reload of snow leopard week. first time went use whois command, did not work. seems hang, never spitting out information domain give it.

$ whois google.com    whois server version 2.0    domain names in .com , .net domains can registered  many different competing registrars. go http://www.internic.net  detailed information.  
this works fine on other systems on network, , don't have software installed on mac think cause this. here couple of things i've tried:

• set mac use dhcp, because other systems i've tried in dhcp ip pool.
• set other working machines source-nat using same public ip use mac, , continued work after clearing local dns caches.
• disabled ipv6 (i use normally, , have never had issues).

machine replaced macbook pro never have me issues. used same private , public ip addresses, , nothing has changed in router firewalls.

use command time, , don't want have keep using ssh or web whois lookup. please help!

which whois server using?

if it's default (see 'man whois'), happens if use different whois server?

happens if use network utility.app, located in /applications/utilities, has whois tab?

of other utilities in network utility.app fail, ping or lookup?

Woke up with no service iPhone 4 jailbreak on ios 5.0.1

so woke yesterday phone off... did not turn off. when turned on connect wifi not 3g. therefor if not in wifi, can not text, on internet... , cant make calls anywhere. or receive.

12 hours later connected 3g 30 mins without me doing anything. got flood of texts didnt come in. , no 3g...

have tried undoing jailbreak. still same problem. tried toggling airplane mode. restored iphone. tried 10 second hold on power , home. tried restoring network settings. nothings working. have ideas of do?!?!?!

since has been restored unjailbroken verizon iphone @ ios 5.1

please help!!

i have set check if file exists, , if download in progress, , if neither true, downloads. problem if during download click row, , warning wait until current download finished, still names original mp3 name of 2nd clicked row. ideas how can keep happening?

How to use Apple TV storage

so, buy apple tv unit, hook hdtv , braodband connection, , stream content ( quite slowly, broadband download seems 7mb / sec on adsl line )

know has local storage, surely if buying ( opposed renting ) content i'd need store locally avoid long repeated streaming downloads of same thing?

so, buy apple tv, hdmi interface cable, , else store content locally?. don't need lot of computer backup, might useful, how local hdtv content storage? apple product, vendor? options?

the appletv have no user accessible storage, has 8gb flash storage temporary caching of streamed content.

purchased content naturally reside in itunes library on pc/laptop. either stream itunes library, or via cloud if applicable.

only some movies will sync

i converted few of dvds mp4 sync ipad.

of them sync fine wont.

movies play in itunes.
resoltuion of movies varies, 1 of ones @ 1280 sync's on without problem.

ideas might preventing of movies syncing not others. no errors or warnings given itunes.

Time Capsule and Brother Printer Issues

i have brother hl-2270dw attached tc via ethernet. every time print tc light flashes yellow , lose internet connection mbp attached tc. comes after print job complete. noticed on hl-2170w had earlier , lived it, new printer find frustrating. i'm running 10.7.3 on mbp , tc 3rd gen 7.6.1.

same sorta problem, wish help

old brother hl-2170w hates time capsule router too. wish help.

had no problem linking wifi network ready brother laser printer old linksys e1000 wifi router. every time try link brother tc, cannot login password , printer loses ip address (usually 10.10.1.x) , reverts 0.0.0.0

currently, have printer hooked directly mac pro tower's usb ports. bad, because means wife needs me turn on mac use networked printer.

Remember I am new to Mac ? about recovery

i wanting make recovery disk (dvd) can boot dvd drive if bad happens. have read , read instructions, etc. need know in simple newbie language. macbook pro came snow leopard , upgraded lion apple store. can not find files or folder instructions keep referring to- "install os x lion. app". supposely directions, find in applications. using finder , spotlight, not find it. can me? want able boot if heck breaks out.

Problems

hello, new forum here, , dont know question should go if im in wrong place let me know. have problem macbook pro, until plug in mini display port vga adapter in , sharp lcd tv automatically connect , computer show on it. got new adapter thinking might solve problem, bought new vga , hdmi 1 too. didnt solve problem. have found hdmi works on other tvs have not 1 use. dont understand why stop working sudden , frustrating. guys , glad apart of forum.

specs macbook pro are:
15-inch, mid 2010
2.66 intel core i7
4gb ddr3 ram
nvidia geforce gt 330m 512 mb/ intel hd graphics

i'm not sure what's causing problem, display on sharp lcd show while using seemingly broken adapter if go system prefs > displays , press "detect displays" button? if so, adapter transmitting signal fine.

SSD upgrade for a mid-2010 macbook pro 15

hey guys, decide time make upgrade prices relatively cheaper(nearly $1/gb or less) , want add ssd computer. know can search this, there couple specific questions wanted cleared up.

have 2010 macbook pro 15inch i5 processor

know have couple routes can take ssd upgrade. can either replace optical bay , ssd put 1 in there.
choice put os , apps on ssd , keep else on hdd.

or
replace hdd entirely , have on ssd(documents, music, etc.) think temperatures computer gets @ times.

whats fastest speed computer able recognize ssd? no point in wasting money in getting 6gps
particular companies should leaning towards? looking minimum of 120 or 160gb. i've heard not great things ocw due constant updates , drive failures

i got 180gb ocz vertex ii both 17 inch mid-2010 mbp , uncle's 15 inch mbp. never had problems, replaces hdd , got our files on (superdrive still intact). cheap 1 when bought in 2011 (before vertex iii came out).

i've been looking @ upgrading years old router more modern. after having tried several newer models various companies, think ready enter world of apple branded routers. there have been number of issues dropped connections, inexplicable lockups, , outdated firmware linksys, netgear, , d-link hardware i've had experience using, , i've been told aebs tends nice, stable device. however, have questions before make purchase. how security on aebs? should concerned lack of spi firewall? every router i've used has had feature, bit uneasy not having aebs.

memory leak, IOkit, and ARC

i'm working on small app provides information similar coconut battery, plugs menu bar. not groundbreaking, it's more hobby me right

app relies on iokit access battery information.

after launching app, uses 10 mb of memory. noticed after week of running, memory usage 100 mb, , keeps growing @ slow rate. steps taken:

enabled arc (automatic reference counting) , adjusted code accordingly. no change.
used instruments , found iokit leaked few kb per minute - app checks battery status every 10 seconds, , each time leak memory.
disabled arc, enabled garbage collection. apparently closed leaks, app down leaking 20 kb per hour. @ point small leakage occurs every few minutes, , doesn't seem correlated particular action inside program.

@ point should stop worrying... full month of running make app use 20 mb. comparison, ran coconut battery through instruments, , turns out leak same amount of memory.

below screenshot of instruments - seems indicate leak somewhere deep within iokit. i'm aware in cases it's still user error.

first off, makes no difference in you're under contract, iphone not subsidized costs same regardless.
secondly, apple has 0 obligation make process easy you, hacking phones work in way did not intend.

i've yet see single ipod classic in wild - think it's matter of time until touch becomes full-sized ipod.

don't think classic going anywhere fast, time january 2010 swings round 500gb+ drives fit in ipod , cheap enough.

Backup and Storage Advice Needed

over past few months have been making transition pc mac. "clean install", if will.

in addition iphones , ipads, have new mac mini serves htpc , general home computer, 2 laptops (air , pro), connected (some wirelessly , wired) through airport extreme , extended airport express.

1 missing piece of puzzle backup , storage. have no backup (which can't continue) , storage on hard drives in various devices themselves.

after spending days pouring through forum , others, thinking getting 2tb time capsule backup , 6tb g-raid storage.

g-raid, i'm assuming, have connected directly mini firewire. largely used storing our dvds , cds, don't think that's issue wonder if easy move files between , other devices?

there flaws in plan? there better way of doing it?

appreciate any comments.

the plan you're outlining sounds it'll work fine, i'll offer rather similar setup example:

have mbp, imac, , htpc mini using single aebs network hub (mini , imac wired, mbp wireless).

run setup mini acting backup , file server else. has 2 external drives; 1 contains "working" files (media, documents, etc) accessed directly other computers in house (and it, when it's playing music through or video directly stereo or tv). other backup drive contains 3 partitions--a relatively small partition used time machine on network other 2 macs, , third backups of main data drive.

setup has worked flawlessly me; network time machine disks work smoothly (although wireless backups mbp slow enough, , interfere wireless mouse, don't have running automatically, on-demand), , in event of severe disk corruption or catastrophic failure of case (rather drive) i've got separate hardware device full backup. it's possible keep online data drive on fw800; backup drive can budget usb2 disk, since speed doesn't matter.

now, because wife keeps me on shoestring budget, have single-drive cases both of those, if had more money throw @ it, i'd running larger raid5 on-line drive, , limit backups subset of files care about, leaving rest semi-protected raid5, vulnerable disk corruption or failed case.

advantage of setup on using time capsule can use cheap usb external in place of time capsule, , it's easy upgrade (or replace in case of drive failure); mini has plenty of cpu spare, runs @ least fast as, if not faster than, time capsule when using gigabit ethernet link. tried using disk sharing feature of aebs have usb external, repeatably corrupted backups after period of time (and slow on top of it), far can figure because there isn't enough cpu in thing handle number of disk transactions.

it's going little more power hungry using time capsule, mini pretty thrifty, , if regularly use background downloading or media serving (networked itunes) it's worthwhile tradeoff.

[full disclosure: due hardware constraints , limited budget, plus geekiness, setup technically using esata data drive , fw800 backup, because frankenmini'd mac externalize sata ports. data drive has small boot partition on it, since there's no internal drive (or optical drive) in mini. , have stack of 3 bare 2tb drives full of ripped dvd collection use toaster-style dock, keeps data needs on main drive pretty light, single 2tb plenty.]

iMac G4 SSD via Firewire / HDD Question

hi,

ive purchased imac g4 700mhz cpu, 1gig memory , 40 gig hdd.

aim machine serve media server atv2 in living room. want maximise stream speed access hard drive's (as far im aware) important factor. ssd appealing silent operation , perhaps faster if g4 can keep it.....

imac has usb , firewire 400. question (which im struggling find answers online) provide fastest read/write speed out of following:

1. ssd drive adaptor fitting internally
2. ssd in external case running through firewire 400
3. ssd in external case running through usb

or g4 not quick enough ssd hdd fast?

operation noise different.

Can't transfer any iTunes songs from MacBook Air to iPad

tried doing search here , google answers turned wild goose chase getting me nowhere. lot of similar threads no answers me.

macbook air 10.7.2 latest itunes 10.5.3 , ipad (gen1) has 5.0.1 apple "music" app replaced "ipod" app.

because of ridiculous common problem of "ipad synced itunes library", won't let me move itunes songs imported cds, ipad unless "erase ipad" above message says. ipad synced old laptop no longer have since there work-around sync, there work-around transfer songs?

in "sync music" window on macbook, selected songs in itunes transfer ipad when clicking apply error above. tried right clicking ipad in itunes there isn't applicable there use, tried anyway nothing works. crazy.

you can sync music 1 computer, make work need let erase includes inside music , videos.. because apple isn't keen file sharing , that's why cannot sync on several computers, otherwise file sharing obsolete..

AFP lion causing finder issues

i don't know if else has come across issue i'm stuck this possibly 1 of random glitches have come across in lion.

i'll explain situation in basic form...

bought iomega network cloud storage 1tb drive time machine, reserved ip address on wifi router , setup device setting wanted, after restart of device , macbook pro started time machine full backup of mac, took around 2-3 hours left carry on doing it.

every 15 mins time machine backup had been changed worked fine 3 hours.

error pop "time machine cannot use device has incorrect afp settings" thats total rubbish backed last 6 hours or absolutely fine no issues, restart mac , network hard drive ruined finder setting in fact became corrupted had delete .plist , restart fixed issue, checked setting on network hdd , decided delete mac setting form hard drive , start again see if nhd work, did , again backing fine 2-3 hours until boom done same thing again same error message , same .plist corruption?

i'm sure issue time machine or iomega software sometime fails load up, i've updated them both including drive firmware latest version supposed fix glitch apples updated afp still fails after set time, think issue fact there no keychain access authenticating nhd think time machine forgets user name , password drive , iomega drive won't let time machine log causing afp errors, re-authenticate manually , doesn't try throws afp error, time machine kind of rubbish honest i've seen better.

lion changed how handles authentication afp shares. if maker of drive has not patched software make compatible you'll have few options.

have qnap nas , once qnap patched firmware, , issues resolved. see if iomega has patch unit

Reminders Question

rather new iphone maybe silly question, i'm not sure. want create reoccurring reminders occur on days, when tried first time didn't reoccur (as far know).

it's possible didn't hear reminder alarm @ time, after fiddling around bit seems have manually check completed box before create new reminder next day. how built in reminders app works? should different app continuously remind regardless of whether completed first reminder?

if use icloud calendar, can set event repeat want many reminders (of different times) want. also, can create number of color-coded calendars (ex: home, work, family events). can have or combination of these separate calendars show in calendar app.

may not totally answer question re: reminders app, work well. not gps activated.

iPad 3 with Windows 7 iTunes Photo Library. Bug?

i not sure if others experiencing same issue am.

photo synching not working correctly ipad 3 windows 7 itunes photo library. unable synch photos. e.g. have tried synching multiple folders containing on 9k pictures, numerous times. 300 photos new ipad , other times less. have deleted ipod photo cache within folder. still nothing me.

have searched over. side note, able synch original ipad , ipad 2 photo collection. not new ipad. experiencing same issue? help! it's frustrating!

have latest itunes release well. restored new ipad factory settings , tried again. same result. why!??

16gb is the PERFECT size for the iPad!

ok, admit created thread title "32gb , 64gb owners lack self confidence" in here wanted encourage fellow 16gb ipad 3 owners. got down setting 16gb wifi ipad want , want share how it's filled. main space filling app called logos. it's bible app works in conjuction software on laptop. takes 5.2gb because downloaded 1290 resources own (bibles, commentaries, magazines, dictionaries, books, etc). have 25 game apps including modern combat 3 (1.8gb) , real racing 2 hd (1.1gb) , dungeon defenders (949mb).

have ibooks , khan academy , itunes u more learning have netflix can watch old shows watch. , have 462mb left on

have 64gb iphone keep music , pictures. never download movies.

there go. have more books loaded on ipad ever able read. more games ever have time play (and gaming 1 of biggest hobbies). , in 2 things, i'm 100% mobile since games , books downloaded. if want watch netflix, have on wifi.

point of post: 16gb perfect meeee @ exact time , people need stop coming on macrumors , hyperventilating won't able put 20gb of music, 20gb of movies, 10gb of games , 10gb of pictures/videos on ipad.

though since find iphone more convenient use max capacity (64gb right now).

if wanted buy 64gb ipad store stuff , 16gb iphone reading material wouldn't made bad decision regret. understand needs not needs , happy them afford ios device

How to prepare my iPad 2 to give to my g/f

i got new ipad, , giving ipad 2 girlfriend. it's jailbroken on 5.0.1 , don't want lose jailbreak.

plugged mbp , unticked "sync apps", "sync music", etc etc try , remove stuff, music , photos still on there. plugged g/f's mb, , chose "erase , sync" seems it's trying add stuff mine, rather remove stuff.

can't use "erase content , settings" because it's jailbroken , option doesn't work. , can't restore firmware, cos apple stopped signing 5.0.1 , i'd have upgrade 5.1 , therefore lose jailbreak.

other options?

be real man. give ipad 3.

Would I benefit from more RAM?

i'm considering upgrade 8 gb of ram, 4 gb sticks cheap @ moment.
mb pro benefit such upgrade? these stats after day of casual usage (mostly browsing, dealing office stuff etc.):
physmem: 878m wired, 1963m active, 903m inactive, 3744m used, 350m free.
vm: 211g vsize, 1092m framework vsize, 512419(0) pageins, 412(0) pageouts
thing i'm concerned rather low amount of free memory after doing practically no heavy computing. need quit running programs in order not experience slowdowns in aperture? on other hand, wouldn't take longer hibernate 8 gb of ram?

for £18 or $30 i'd it, regardless of low ram issue you're getting. simple install , make machine better.

hi, bought pos belkin router few years ago have been using wireless needs in house. upgraded internet connection 60 mbps , when directly plugged in router around 40 mbps. (i know advertised speed never occur in real world tests). on wireless connection max out 15ish mbps, upgrading newest airport solve problem?

it's hard say, i'm inclined vote no on this. if router has capability pump out more mbps it's delivering it's environment factor contributing slow transfer. upgrading unlikely fix issue.

when ipad 2 came out, black seemed default colour - following ipad 1.

now, looks apple once again pushing white signature color (the first new ipad photo shown white, , 90% of marketing materials new ipad shows in white)

me: iphone in black, , ipad in white. think white iphone looks odd, hard, square edges, soft white doesn't match it... attempt make otherwise masculine design more feminine (like every other phone manufacturers out there trying make girl's version of phone)...the ipad however, looks cool white, more tapered , soft curves - gives sort of more high-tech look... take.

i think black design looks cleaner. white version has surface areas broken more.

How iTunes 10.6 Differentiates 720p & 1080p - for the video library/tagging community

i've run few test files through new itunes 10.6, , can report:

* itunes support both 720p , 1080p versions of same video reported 1 entry, same way supports sd , hd copies. however, not have "hd 1080p" badge or that.

* itunes gives choice on whether prefer sd, 720p, or 1080p playback

* presumably choice extend syncing options new ipad , iphone 4s

* here's nitty gritty on how hd files tagged: basically, whereas before hdvd atom either 0 (sd) or 1 (hd), accepted values 0 (sd), 1 (720p) , 2 (1080p). presently there no software allow set hdvd 2; subler updated allow this. now, can set hex editor 0xed.
