Going to China need advice

i going china on february 16. have iphone 4s on verizon. cheapest way make calls both within china friend going , communicating home? friend suggested buy unlocked $100 nokia phone on amazon , buy sim card when there , less expensive. can buy card on there fit in iphone? want able check voice messages couple times day. anyone's , suggestion.

 

you can have verizon unlock iphone 4s sim slot use local sim long youve been customer 60 days,i believe china unicom has micro sims
