Switching to unlocked iPhone

hi all,

think work, i'd make sure.

i'm leaving country next month , sounds i'll need have unlocked iphone 4s use there. have 4s under contract, locked at&t. tried going cutyoursim route, doesn't seem panning out. so, plan buy unlocked iphone apple, , sell 4s pay it. how pull off?

-purchase , receive new phone
-put old sim card in & activate it
-call at&t update imei
-wipe old phone
-sell old phone

when move, i'll cancel at&t contract & pay etf.

sound right?
