Using 24" iMac (Early 2009) As a Monitor

hey been googling , searching these forums haven't been able find precise answer yet.

have 2011 mba , title states, 2009 imac. both of these machines have mini display port wondering, if bought mini displayport mini displayport cable, able use imac monitor mba?

seem naturally work articles find posted apple refer 27" imacs.

found cable 6 bucks may order , test myself, figured if answer first, mine well.

 

it not work, 27" imac can used external display.

maybe airdisplay, allows use macs "display" via network.
