New Mac set-up for design student

i have started graphic design program @ school. have 13" macbook pro, know not ideal screen using designing. because cost major factor @ moment, wanted know if hook-up laptop older 23" cinema hd display? , able use wireless mouse , keyboard? also, have heard , bad things magic mouse, of course beautiful, suitable design work? or should go more homely looking functional mouse?

 

it's nice have larger screen size, , helpful design work. if 23" cinema display dvi model, need mini displayport dvi adapter ($29.00). if it's vga model, it's same price of mini displayport vga adapter.

able use wireless bluetooth keyboard , mouse. love trackpads have magic trackpad. allows me fine finger movement , adjustments. but, best mouse 1 comfortable using.
