external hard drive issue on lion

i'm receiving error anytime try transfer and hard drive.

working fine yesterday when put 40gb worth of stuff on there, took gf's house tonight transfer files computer , giving me errors.

figured computer, brought home , tried transfer same files desktop , didn't work.

things i've tried:

- formatting drive through disk utility. fat32 , mac os x journaled. both giving same error
- different usb cables

things of note:

- hard drive powered usb
- 2.5" sata
- hard drives not being put sleep (system settings)
- working totally fine few days ago

is powered usb only?

kind of drive it?

in 3rd party enclosure you've installed drive or wd or seagate go drive came in enclosure?

first suspect power loss.

can hear drive spinning / down?
