Safe to upgrade Lion and SL now?

is safe update latest lion 10.7.3 , latest sl patch yet? didn't update because of concerns on bugs , them breaking things.

software update on lion computer still wants download 1.5gb combo updater, did apple ever released fixed standalone updater?

latest snow leopard patch? heard broke roestta, did of issues fixed more too?

doing pretty important stuff related finishing grad school right , can't afford systems go down or lose functionality due bugs in updates. however, being exposed security vulnerabilities not thing either.

maybe should continue hold off couple of months. software update gets annoying keeps bothering me upgrade.
