Resolved Mail has broken in both iphone and ipad

i travelling last week in europe , @ hotel had free wifi.
able mail normal on either iphone or ipad (both running ios 5x).
remember seeing message allowing or denying sort of incoming connections on both devices @ 1 point, , hit deny.
things seemed continue ok, home in uk, if try mail either device, presented welcome mail window , forced set new mail account. won't verify info , tells me can't connect using ssl , if want try connecting without it.
if yes, never finishes verifying , if decline, process stops completely.
both devices behaving same way , both fine before.
use regular pop account ntlworld, , desktop computer still works fine getting mail. have no other mail accounts, such gmail, etc.
have tried rebooting each device no effect, , tried sync devices connecting computer , itunes.
nothing seems work.
can advise on may have done wrong , how fix problem?
