Jailbreaking erases the baseband?

if jailbreak iphone 3g running 4.2.1 lose baseband , not able unlock phone?

 

the thing affects baseband, afaik, updating firmware. jailbreaking unlocks restrictions apple places on ios, nothing baseband.
