converting PDF to RTF using Automator issue

i using os x 10.7.2 , have issue converting scanned pdfs rtf using automator. here's issue: when scan text hp all-in-one c6180 , use hp scan able select resulting pdf file , place pdf rtf convertor made in automator , can pull out text , load word editing. not problem. however, if use preview or image capture scan using hp all-in-one resulting file open pdf without problem if attempt convert rtf end empty file. can't seem put finger on problem. appreciated. cheers.

not pdfs contain text.* contain images of text.*is possible preview , image capture , capture images. when open pdf in preview (the 1 captured hp scan software) can highlight text; however, not possible in scans created preview/image capture. thoughts on this?
