Is the new finder encryption option compatible with lion?

hi everyone,
wondering. had flash drive stolen, , want encrypt if happens again, won't able access data again. noticed finder nows allows encrypt gpt drive in mountain lion dp preview. wondering if encrypt using new feature in mountain lion, compatible lion, or snow leopard, since have other computers running operating systems , need know if can still swap data or finder not recognize it? has tried this? thanks...

 

lion introduced encryption ability encrypt disks accessible disk utility. drive should compatible lion.
