over half of small office uses macs, great our corporate backup system not cover them.
need 3 macbooks, 2 running lion , 1 running snow leopard. can upgrade sl lion if help.
have 1tb usb hard drive job with. plenty of space. have partitioned 3 separate drives each of time machines can done on separate partition. backed 2 of 3 computers yesterday plugging in hard drive , running time machine... i'm thinking there might better way: way users automatically time machines on lan, more , less hassle.
have mac mini running lion behind conference room tv use server share usb hard drive.
need usb drive , 3 partitions shared on network, , need 3 users automatically backing time machine partitions whenever on lan?
backing on network time machine can problematic. if users have excellent 802.11n, backup can smooth. if quality not excellent or if speed 802.11g or less, backups can become corrupted , rendered useless. have lost 2 backups due corruption caused network problems , 1 due failed power supply in first gen time capsule.
today usb drive plugged in replacement time capsule on either gigabit ethernet or 802.11n. users slower connectivity time capsule use local usb instead.
backing 1 mac another, think done. 1 approach consider following. this assumes has 802.11n or better connectivity machine. go ahead , delete 3 separate partitions. create sharing account on mac them log into. account have write permission write entire usb drive. when users connect mac (the 1 sharing usb drive), mount , pick "use volume backups". thing use time machine editor.app limit times tm running. if tm runs , machine not available on network, use each users' hard drive making "local" backups.
