Time Machine says HD is full?

its passport thing. deleted off of it.. yet not matter time machine keeps giving me same retarded message "the backup requires 291.08 gb 257.12 gb available."

it's ****in 500bg drive nothing on. wtf?

 

emptied trash yet?
reformatted hdd yet (if nothing on it)?
mac os x version using , how hdd connected (usb guess)?
