i have verizon ipad at&t iphone. know if put at&t sim in vzw ipad hspa+ speeds. if had bought at&t ipad lte? iphone sim still support lte? best guess , logic tells me yes, i'm not sure , can't conduct test.
wouldn't more worthwhile don't pay 2 separate bills? of course barring you're screwed phone calls when have iphone sim in ipad.

if did work, you'll need switch data plan 4g lte plan in order see lte logo @ top. requires call customer service (unlimited plans only; online tier plans) , need imei of 1 of at&t's 4g lte phones. regardless, not know of work. think there have been mixed results.
