How to restore iPod touch 2nd generation after jailbreak.

i have ipod touch 2nd generation, boyfriend decided jailbreak it. i'm trying restore normal settings. downloaded ipod system update , need restore it. however, since it's still in jailbreak won't allow restore. i've tried many things including dfu mode...which have no idea when in dfu mode. want reset original state can give 9 year old boy birthday. -_- any advice appreciated.

i suggest go in apple store , tell them boyfriend did ipod , can't reset more.
