iMac Randomly Kicks on Internal Speekers

when i'm using external speakers imac while listening itunes @ random kick off external speakers , internal speakers again.

idea cause this. suppose speakers don't see how.

here's info:
imac 3.06 intel core 2 duo running version 10.6.8

the time i've seen happen usb speakers since if system thinks disconnected, resets internal speakers.
