i've got 120gb owc electra ssd using on older mac mini fine. removed ssd month or 2 ago when sold mini. received new i7 mini , bought ifixit dual hard drive kit install ssd primary drive use 500gb default drive storage. first thing did open mini install drive before booting machine first time. install physically went fine. when booted computer when started having issues.
osx loaded , told me found drive couldn't read (the ssd) , told me had initialized. no big deal since going wipe anyway , restore time machine backup i'd made previously. entered disk utility , noticed when told partition drive, half way tell me partitioning , take "x" number of minutes. problem time frame wouldn't decrease, rather increase minute minute minute , computer go sleep after being inactive. not right.
noticed instead of drive being guid partition format, set mbr. disk partition (disk0s1) showing in red letters. tells me drive not have valid partition table. have no idea how happened since never used in windows machine or dual booted drive. osx drive. seem having issue i'm unable format drive guid partition table in "options" menu on partition tab of disk utility. hangs during process. partitions, says waiting disk become available , hangs there forever until have force quit disk utility.
interestingly, there random times when have somehow been able seemingly drive formatted guid , can access in osx. when reboot computer recovery mode attempt new lion install, drive shows mbr again. somehow manage guid again , lets me choose drive installation destination, times out on internet download. assume happening because it's having hard time writing download file ssd (i know internet works because when i'm booted osx can surf web fine using wifi or ethernet connection).
tried using gparted based on suggestion , able create apple partition table , format rest of drive hfs+, still run issue of not being able install lion internet recovery option , error stating connection slow, etc. when able somehow drive formatted guid partition table, run "verify disk" , "repair disk" options, tell me found minor issues , repaired them, noticed algo getting error stating "invalid b-tree node size" , wouldn't let me repair it.
have tips? don't think drive bad, can't seem find right combination of procedures go through fix it. i'd ssd , running asap. thought i'd able pop in, format, , restore. guess nothing ever easy... usual
