GPS functionality with no service?

i traveling in sahara desert in future in extremely remote areas absolutely no cell signal or wifi signal. gps still work? download app pre-cached maps in order explore current location , save travel path? or gps not able determine location? if not, why? input!

 

it requires type of connection work.
