For 2G Touch iOS 3.1.3 or 4.2.2?

i have 2g touch , still have ios 3.1.3 on it. never upgraded 4.xx because @ time people complaining newer os slower. 10 year old son using , wants run latest games. uses games, music, , textplus. if upgrade os run newer games touch run slower overall? able run of newer games impossible test on 4.2.2? tia
