Start-up problem with iMac

hey everyone,

mother having problem older model imac. i'm not 100% on model year, if had make educated guess sometime around '04-'05 (not sure if matters....) can tell newest technology isn't she's concerned with, uses computer minimal internet browsing , checking e-mail only. yesterday, tried start computer , encountered "a blank grey screen "loading circle" repeating on , on again" (as described her). computer pretty old, fix if can considering doesn't need more basic desktop. has else had problem, , have suggesting of things try? or computer fried? help, appreciated!

i'd try booting installation disk. it's possible hard drive died.
