Installing New Harddrive and Updating OS

relatively new mac user here. have black macbook, 2007, 2 ghz intel core 2 duo , 2 gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram, running os x 10.4.11. hard drive has been having serious problems lately--trouble booting, losing files, etc. took apple store , tech there said had @ best 3 months left. off record advised me buy hard drive , install myself, that's i'm trying do.

here's question: i've backed important files on external hd. since i'll starting fresh hard drive, can skip updating , jump straight lion new operating system? should go snow leopard instead? don't have experience software on mac, , don't want mess up. , advice appreciated. thanks!

i've done several times. have 2 methods. 1 pop in new drive, install os dvd , pick "migrate time machine backup". slow. better alternative use carbon copy cloner make new bootable drive can swapped in.

here did. downloaded carbon copy cloner. purchased 2.5 inch sata hard drive. picked 1 felt carry me while.

picked usb sata cable (about $10-15). plugged in new drive , formatted hfs+ (guid partition scheme) in disk utility. let carbon copy cloner make clone of macintosh hd new drive. did while still running snow leopard.

booted holding down option , picked new drive prove myself bootable. once knew bootable, opened macbook , put in.
