New MBP, snow leopard, tips to speed it up?

i feel computer isn't fast be... part of problem because have cloned hd, don't want fresh install because it's of pita worth it.

ram , hd upgraded, disk , permissions repair no issues. didn't notice of diffference after upgrading.

here's specs:
-mid-2011 mbp
-10.6.8
-intel i7
-8gb ram
-hitachi 750gb 7200rpm hard drive
-4 firewire , 1 usb drive typically mounted.
-hyperthreading enabled.

main issues...
-slower since replacing ram, after it's booted, it's faster not much.
-kernal_task using 700-900 mb of ram typically, 600 on startup. windowserver goes 70% cpu.
-ram usage appears efficent in task manager , ifreemem.

don't know how of normal, expecting much? said, of right fresh install not option.

 

unless pushing existing ram limits before upgrading won't notice of difference in terms of that.
