Macbook Pro Stays on Gray Screen and Will Not Recognize Boot Disk

i have macbook pro (late 2008) running lion. want sell macbook pro, did not have bootable cds. so, proceeded manually back-up , delete of files. followed instructions on apple.com change account name name of new user. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428

unfortunately, when deleted original user account via users & groups pane (as explained on apple.com), did not work expected. deleted original account in users & groups pane, files still in macintosh hd> users. drug original account folder (from mac hd> users) trash new user not have access of data. when clicked on system preferences> users & groups, came error message said not access users & groups. put original user file in users, did not solve problem. decided restart computer since seems clear glitches.

@ point, when computer attempted restart, stayed on gray screen spinning circle , apple logo. have read ton of forums online, have not had success recommendations yet. last resort, purchased , downloaded lion , made bootable dvd. however, macbook not recognizing besides hd. have tried dvd, thumb drive, , external hard drive , none of them appear when boot while pressing option key.

appreciate suggestions on how fix macbook or recommendations on might wrong. thank much!

and holding option when hear chime?
