iMessages coming through as texts

a friend of mine bought iphone last night. reason, of texts coming through green (sent text message) , others coming through blue (imessages). usually, text messages come @ start of conversation , convert after message or 2 using imessage system.

bug? don't have text messaging plan anymore due imessage , i'm getting randomly charged text messages should using imessage.

 

maybe being sent threw phone # , apple id? or selects phone # or apple id sometimes.
