Apple's Messages Beta for Mac Includes Retina Sized Artwork

there has been plenty of evidence apple planning ultra high resolution mac displays. in july 2011, we first detailed existence of new "hidpi" mode in os x lion. hidpi mode put in place in anticipation of day macs have double-resolution (4x number of pixels) "retina" displays.

on iphone, apple's plan make easier on developers jump 2x linear resolution. example, 1440x900 pixel screen go straight 2880x1800 pixels. allow applications automatically scale factor of 2 without having include high resolution artwork. apple made such transition when going iphone 3gs's screen (320x480) iphone 4's retina display (640x960).

in ios, developers can include high resolution versions of artwork designated "@2x" suffix. developer documentation:

@ of resources apple's new messages app shows several graphics come in multi-part tiffs include regular , double resolution versions. in fact, if @ information embedded within images, can see resources @ 1 point named in same "@2x" convention. so, seems apple's messages app building in support retina displays on mac.

rumors have even suggested might see our first retina display macs in 2012. 1 report claimed apple working on 2880x1800 macbook pro middle of year.
