Time Machine Q

i reading same description of how time machine works it's not answering question.

right have 300gb of data on macbook pro , want backed on external hd , of deleted computer. exhd 1tb.

i'm understanding tm's making multiple backups, means i'm going run out of space pretty fast. doesn't make sense me i'm assuming i'm misunderstanding , it's backing changes made files, not backing every dang thing multiple times, is right?

if want multiple changes backed up? is keeping recent change of day/week/month or multiples?

not want tm delete old backups, can't seem find out how have alert me before i'm running out of space (versus automagically erasing things photos may want on external). is there way turn off auto-deletes?

i'm coming conclusion tm great continuous backup not long-term storage, since deletes long-term storage. am right in or missing something?

if case , exhd being used tm, can turn tm off , backup updates in other way, or formatted tm , i'll need reformat , manually? (such copying things on , having ether replace or make second copy of things goes according want do.)

hope making sense because feel i'm talking myself in circles. :)

in advance,
tara

you're right in assuming backs changes made since last backup, not entire computer each time.

believe, , tell me if i'm wrong, still keep old versions of files if has been updated , re-backed (for example, if have document backed on january 1, , changed on january 2, 2 different versions of file available on backup disk, 1 under each of dates).

i've had time machine inform me when backup disk getting full, prior deleting backups.

technically, can turn off time machine , manually transfer files want between mac , backup drive if 'normal' external disk, without having delete existing backups.

if there things want backed up, open time machine preferences, click options, , can choose folders exclude backup. way, items want keep backed be.
