1 of senate's few remaining republican moderates shocked political world on tuesday , announced not seek re-election year.

maine sen. olympia snowe announced not seek fourth term because tired of polarization , partisanship has permeated washington in recent years.

"unfortunately, not realistically expect partisanship of recent years in senate change on short term," said in statement explaining decision retire.

maine's junior gop senator, susan collins, said in statement "absolutely devastated" snowe's decision leave senate. snowe first elected in 1994. collins elected in 1996.

snowe said ability win re-election not @ issue—she heavily favored win re-election. exit gives democrats new opportunity pick gop-held seat in year fighting hold on control of senate.

not total surprise, guess, , can't blame her, still shame. need more, not fewer, people willing talk guys on other side of aisle.
