Using external hard drive plugged into wifi router

hi. have netgear n300 router, has usb port. if plug wd external hard drive music , movies saved it, right in thinking delete them macbook air still access them via wifi router?

if opened itunes need change settings access external hard drive folders rather mac air user folder?

else doing this? tips on setting appreciated.

bought new mac air lastnight, has 128gb ive used 60gb already.
use mac in house aswel.
