Mac Mini 2011 - RAID HD Set Up?

i have 2011 mac mini 2.3ghz i5. 8gb ram. have standard 500gb hd , bought 2nd 500gb apple hitachi hd £40.

know need ribbon cable install etc .. set them raid inside machine show 1 single 1tb drive?

disadvantages doing so?

when making them raid drive wipe existing disk?

never used raid before nor know wondered ease if keep them single 1tb drive timemachine or similar recognise 1 single drive , etc

yes, can set raid via disk utility, still need second cable. in order 1 gb out of 2 drives, need use raid 0.

the disadvantage raid 0 if either of drives fail, volume damaged. therefore must make sure backup volume regularly external 1 tb hdd drive, via app carbon copy cloner.

advantage have 1 one tb volume , 2 drives faster using raid 0.

yes, need first external drive mentioned above , clone current start disk drive. (using full block copy in carbon copy cloner, if you're concerned retaining recovery partition). install second drive , make sure visible , working ok.

need restart computer , boot external drive (hold alt during boot up).

need go disk utility , create raid 0 volume using 2 500 gb hdds. once done, fire ccc , clone external drive new raid volume. restart computer , boot using internal partition. go preferences --> start disk , make sure internal partition set.

yes, will, recommend clone internal partition using ccc. maybe hdd if you're bent on using tm, find full bootable clone of system more useful , better.
