Hard Drive Failing?

i in search of data recovery app. have precious photos , video files cherish on external hard drive.
whenever plug computer, nothing appears in finder. appears on disk utility though. tried repairing it, tells me should try recover files, up, , reformat it.
, that's why need data recovery app.

guys have suggestions? thanks.

 

to retrieve files, have been deleted , been emptied trash, can use

data rescue 3 (trial lets scan hdd , see, if data recoverable, recover files, need buy full version 99 usd) or
filesalvage (trial lets scan hdd , see, if data recoverable, recover files, need buy full version 89.95 usd).
diskdrill - lets recover data hfs/hfs+, fat, ntfs & other file systems right on mac[/i].​

know, should stop writing processes actual hdd. if same hdd 1 operating system (os) resides on, better use external hdd mac os x on boot , install data rescue or filesalvage onto scan hdd data has been accidentally deleted.

no, still works fine. must have gone wrong while updating, , maybe damaged now. try reinstall app.

MBP as desktop or move on?

recently 2007 mpb suffered torn screen ribbon. works fine connected external monitor, i'm thinking investing few hundred dollars create decent desktop (new monitor, keyboard , mouse). don't care losing portability, questioning whether it's worth money create desktop out of older machine.

i'm concerned how non-apple external monitors work mbps. while i'm not looking same clarity mbp monitor, i'd relatively close. and, i'd able inexpensive monitor. once "desktop" gets above $300, think makes more sense @ newer used imac.

stories lack of sharpness external monitors exception or rule? short of hooking mbp bunch of monitors @ big box store, i'm not sure how can figure out monitors work well.

lack of "sharpness" vs. mbp screen? that's new 1 me... haven't run don't mess around budget displays either...

i'm switching imacs mbps , external displays. don't care imac "glassy" display , lack of ergonomic adjustments. external displays can purchased of better quality stock imac displays comparable price. don't require power of imac or power mac , idea of having "all in one" mac both desktop , portable computer.

1 route can take increase budget , display can use portable mac when upgrade. 1 area don't scrimp display, spend of day on macs , image editing, needs may different yours. new imac costs substantially more $300, why not consider spending little more money since figure must include new input devices?

prefer nec displays high quality, reliability , 4 year warranty. ldc displays start @ $300 msrp; there thirty ccfl backlit models led backlit.

other people have suggestions less expensive displays. monitors photography web site asus display less $300: http://monitorsforphotography.com/reviews/asus-pa238q-23-review-best-value-monitor-for-photography. don't have personal experience asus displays , if considering @ other review web sites before making decision.

What your take on Multi-Tasking Gestures on the new iPad?

when got new ipad, hesitant enable multi-tasking gestures. i'm glad did. going iphone first ipad , larger screen feeling sorta uncomfortable @ times pressing home button go home screen or double pressing home button multi-task. find gestures easier. have use 4 fingers , pinch go home screen , use 4 fingers , swipe bottom access multitask bar @ bottoms.

i'm finding wish same on iphone 4s! it's easier.

think of feature?

 

i don't find myself utilizing enough...i know exist, app switching, chances next app want isn't "next" app i'm in, in case double click of home button easier me.

i need replace trusty 2003-vintage 1.8 ghz dual proc power mac use exclusively music production. i'm on limited budget, first instinct hottest used mac pro (octocore, 8g ram) find on craigslist.

then, started thinking (danger!)...

why don't macbook pro! (which use in studio, playing live, doing animation projects, using @ work, etc...) so, here's nascent plan:

• get 2.8 ghz i7 13" 128 g ssd - $1599
• upgrade 8 or maybe 16 g ram (aftermarket save $) $45 - $120
• switch odd second ssd, put odd in enclosure - $300

voila.

don't want wait redesigned mpb, since:

• i don't know if there second drive hack there current mbp
• i use firewire audio interface , wary of thunderbolt adapter (adapters in general)
• from sound of it, there won't new mbp in price range

sound plan bitchin' quite machine on tiny side?

reason expect apple lower price of unit once new line announced, la ipads?

 

if you're worried price, buy refurbished. it's same laptop different box less money.

sure want dual-core laptop integrated gpu "animation projects?" stuff sounds 15" mbp better suited (quad-core cpu , dedicated graphics).

i have watched youtube vids of zagg invisible shield being fitted ipad. appear long applied correctly.

has here got/tried one? if how find it?

can see has cut outs speaker etc have cut out camera?

 

i have zagg skin on original ipad , in opinion best screen , body protector available. there's no noticeable difference when touching screen, it's thin, , it's strong. if don't having big cases on ipad , want best protection, recommend sure. apparently it's made same material coats helicopter blades, protect them dirt , rocks etc. newer skins have cut out camera, check zagg website.

i have rss feed of podcast containing mp3s. have php script created parses rss me, , display php in webview. when clicked, mp3s begin playing in webview, there limitations method. have enable wifi only, download of file possible, , exceed 5mb per 5 minute check in app review. able download mp3 app and/or stream app (could create uialertview asking if want stream or download) , when enough downloaded, begin playing immediately, , set in way not exceed bandwidth on cellular usage. best way download mp3 when selecting episode, set limits on bandwidth, , begin playing when enough downloaded?

anyway, onto point. noticed in our recent purchase not seen before. 1 mbp 17" takes extremely long time "chime" between pram resets. test on own unit, hold option-cmd-p-r on @ boot time. many units seem take 35 seconds initial boot second chime (when holding down keys), 1 unit have - , 1 - takes twice long...

run this? unit otherwise unremarkable , shows no errors or malfunctions. in fact, benches best of lot, why i'm asking question.

Import "not authorized" on iTunes 10 home sharing

we have our imac , our windows laptop set itunes home sharing. can play laptop's tunes on imac can't play imac's tunes on pc. we've tried de- , reauthorizing home sharing thing , using same account login, it's still not working. pc can see library imac, when double-click on track, "import not authorized" message. both machines running itunes 10. ideas? thanks!

it's me, mail's search seems not working.

manages give me results when enter someone's name.. moment i'm looking specific words doesn't show me @ all. doesn't seem right.. right?

i'm using lion, way.

 

time reset things.

1. time speed mail. make sure mail closed , use freeware speedmail , run (while mail closed down).

2. re-index spotlight: open /applications/utilities/terminal , put in command

code:

sudo mdutil -e /

(you can copy code , run it). leave terminal open until prompt re-index have started. can take while if have big hard drive take while.

try these 2 steps see if helps mail's search. when try these steps make sure mail not running!

guess question is, should wait new 1 come out , fix laptop or buy 1 now? need laptop work , can't without one. again don't want ultra thin laptop rather 1 need (i'm planning 17 inch 1 anyway) , current laptop quite good...

i have read here move photos in iphoto move iphoto library external. move picture files external or reference actual files still in mac? need sure make this.

have mix of things in mac. use picasa, using lightroom , stopped using iphoto long ago, still have libraries , iphoto tree.

goal: want move entirely dual system of picasa for home photos and lightroom serious experimentation.

need sure moving library folder hd files moving well, not reference actual files.


then, want move of rest photos imported picasa (this easy) , lightroom external keep mac free of photos.

btw, see folders on mac named "iphoto library recovered photos" don't remember how landed there or how did this. in there list of files inside, in pictures folder, in others find strange named file.

 

iphoto, if not set otherwise in preferences, stores photos import in iphoto library file, which, depending on amount of photos in it, should several gb in size.
iphoto library file located inside pictures folder, copying/moving folder external hdd copy/move photos it.

find other photos, can use finder , search function (cmd+f) , search kind > pictures , if found 1 or 2 or more, can right click on 1 of them , choose "open enclosing folder".

don't know how picasa works, can't there.
use lightroom, , have setup cloned twice, have photos , libraries 3 times.

How to give more memory to chrome

so have 27" imac, i7 3.4 16gb of ram, 2gb video card, 256gb ssd. , when running wow, try open chrome web browsing , runs slow.. takes ages 1 page another... cant watch videos... cant anything.. tried safari , same thing...

USB drive sized Thunderbolt Drive & Thunderbolt docking stations

i have macbook air , reading threads , tech. sites cant seem find out if possible have small thunderbolt drive size of little usb drive, if possible have more breathing room storage wise.

if possible think start @ price wise , how storage get?

both items (a small thunderbolt drive , thunderbolt display) going come out sooner or later.

, when come out, going cost arm , leg time. other thunderbolt drives out cost considerably more firewire drives of similar capacity.

it's new tech , there limited products available right now, thunderbolt products going premium bit yet.

wasn't long ago (may 2011) couldn't buy thunderbolt cable.

i'm confused @ how possibly track things. pictures, calendar events, ect.

edit: idea fun , creative. can imagine nice on rooted android phone, or jailbroken iphone. track everything. amount of time spent using specific apps, when used apps, , sorts of other things.

Mba 13", Do you miss having a DVD drive?

my 1 question is, miss having dvd drive?

have found inconvenient? like, let's did have 1 moment cursed , have used optical drive integrated on laptop?

i'm excited pick mba 13" tomorrow apple store, i'm still on fence getting computer has no optical drive. co worker apple devout asked me, "when last time used dvd computer other install games?"

raised point. other reinstalling windows 7 on desktop, i've never needed use dvd-roms. games on steam download them.

still, i'm curious if had 1 moment wished had one.

also, what's like? laptop save on cloud? i've toyed 1 , amazing. thin , light. shoulder can't handle 5.4 pounds + books, weight of laptop carried around during undergrad. i'm sure 2.9 pound laptop quite nicer , i'm sure having tethering verizon out "do go" experience

 

ive owned macbook air 4 months after being windows user 19 years.

can no. use make cds time because had no way play itunes in car, through a blutooth speaker can play itunes through car speakers.

being casual gamer though has been kind of annoying though. if hardcore gamer recommend buying cd drive, since don't game doesn't bug me. there steam

i haven't used peel, edge slow. it's 2g connection technology outdated in 2007. norm today 3g, people having 4g.

Scratched back plate. I hate being OCD!

i love reading stories of people have phones 'naked' months @ time , never scratch, i'm not lucky.

have gash (maybe small crack, not sure) on of iphone 4s , it's right on apple logo. of course, couldn't off side can't notice it.

have applecare plus, don't want waste claim on gash less 1/4" long. if cracked, paying $29 fee ok, @ point i'm not sure.

i'm not asking sympathy here, it's needed tell might understand.

Time Capsule Upload Help

hi all. got email isp saying i'm on monthly bandwith of 250gb's!!

logged on check things out. seems i'm downloading approx 1-2gb per day (which seems reasonable) uploading 15gb per day!!

have mac's on network (mac pro, 2 imac's, mac mini, macbook pro) couple iphones, 2 ipads, , hp photosmart printer.

couple of mac's have frostwire, finished downloading whatever, shut down completely.

called isp, have no idea why it's high. there anyway can find out?

wireless router password has been changed every week, , network hidden, , live on dead end street 1 neighbor, highly unlikely cause.

the game works seamlessly on 4s - , ipad 2...

...but on daughter's touch uis glitchy hell - gameplay king george vi before lionel logue...

has had same issue? wonder if iphone 4 (with same a4 chip) has had similar problems - maybe not 4 has more ram....

Program Hogging 100% CPU - Can't Find It

whenever plug in keyboard , mouse macbook, locks cursor in upper left corner.

doing debugging, used activity monitor locate culprit responsible whole ordeal. turns out it's called "controllermate helper", when plugged in causes cpu leak until restart required. cannot force quit it.

looked under library folder, not find supposed be.

how can locate this? search tool , spotlight failing me.

there way locate activity monitor?

Screen dims with Plus symbol in bottom left???

friend has older imac (2005) running tiger 10.4.

finds every few minutes whilst he's using it, screen dims , plus symbol appears @ bottom right of screen.

had him couldn't figure out why doing this.

has else seen this?

btw. should add though old imac, 700mhz processor, startup time , general speed of performance awesome!

 

it dashboard. in dashboard there plus symbol in bottom left, @ least thats on systems running sl , lion, plus there add widgets. cant remember plus on tiger system possible bottom right.
dashboard launched pressing f12 key. possible has side buttons of apple mouse set launch dashboard. check mouse settings in system preferences.

4/3G or just Wi Fi ?

my original ipad wifi , enjoyed it, travelling bit more , wanted 4g. came seattle. hotel wifi okay @ 4 in morning, couldn't connect when few people got on. switched 4g , got 25 mb download speed. used wanted, turned off. it's nice have in pocket when need connection.

Returned Verizon LTE iPad, keeps on searching for signal

got ipad friday noon, did people do, unboxed, synced, charged , activated verizon prepaid lte. signals @ home ok, not or bad, ok, getting advertised 5-12mbps download speeds.

went different part of city dinner time, inside 1930's brick building, sat beside window, got signals. got great speeds! around 20mbps down/15mbps up. after 3-4 hours, notice verizon lte signals going on , off, thinking, maybe it's bad inside building turned lte off, used verizon 3g. of sudden, keeps on searching , searching , searching signal. at&t iphone4s had full bars, , friend's verizon iphone4s had full bars too. then, every 3-5 mins when can't find signal, ipad reboot itself.

so, tried reset network settings of ipad, reprovision verizon service, , ipad restarted, still didn't work. tried re-seat sim card, same thing. decided up, restored it, worked perfectly... 2-3 hours.

ended doing same thing on last paragraph , after 2nd restore, worked perfectly... again 2-3 hours. tried restore it, again 3rd time, now, gave me error , won't restore , stays in recovery mode every restart. repeated restoring no avail.

it's pissing me off 1st-ever ipad has defect, made appointment @ apple store @ 230pm afternoon after using overnight documents need next morning.

got few hours sleep, woke , went apple store. of course store crowded new ipad buyers , there specialists stationed in front screen tried in store. of course got in without hitch told them had genius bar appointment. so, spoke genius guy , explained him happening. finished explaining, told me, he'll replace ipad , wait him standing.

after 45 mins, came out ipad replacement still original box plastic wrap. explained me, why took him while me 1 needed @ least troubleshoot problem, , did tell me wasn't able restore ipad @ secured replacement me. 1 thing needed log , report problem corporate , engineering newly launched product , need gather first-model issues can gather can fix issues.

ended inserting current sim card , logged in verizon activated prepaid account, working perfectly. thinking, when had 1st 1 i'll wait few more hours , see if it'll replicate problem had.

, now, after 32 hours, ipad working perfectly... well, besides usual complaint i'm reading here, longer charging, hot in lower-left side, etc, etc. after 2 days of having ipad, think made right decision in waiting 3rd-gen ipad. , besides, would've thought 1st-time ipad buyer, i've had 2 ipads in less 48 hours. lol

 

ok, lte problems coming back. when ipad goes 3g, either have to:

a) turn cell data off, on. if still doesn't work...
b) turn airplane mode on, off. if still doesn't work...
c) reboot ipad... if worse comes ro worst...
d) reset network settings

got bad week @ least once or 2x day, have reset network settings sucks because have input wifi passwords again , again.

went verizon , have them change sim card per recommendation their twitter support representative. changed sim , reprovisioned account, now, i'm on 3g. no matter rebooting or resetting do. there lte signal on lte ipad display @ verizon store know it's ipad's lte radio.

made appointment today have apple check out, we'll see happens when there. same issues?
