introduction
currently, there's lot of discussion whether or not apple should put bigger screen in next generation iphone. post not discuss whether or not if apple going increase size of iphone's display. post size apple choose when increase size of iphone's display.
currently, iphone has got 3.54" display (give or take few 0.001 inches) resolution of 960 640 (which gives pixel density of 326 pixels per inch).
in post i'm going describe think logical thing apple when increasing display's size.
demands
- apple must able call retina display.
apple pushes 'retina display' term , willing call ipad 3 retina display, though pixel density lower of iphone 4s.
- same 3:2 aspect ratio
the recent idea apple might increase height of display , keeping pixels same size nice, it's unlike apple. apple wants make things easy developers: it's going 960 640 resolution, , if not it's going 1920 1280 resolution - nothing in between.
- 960 640 resolution, or else 1920 1280 resolution
i'm sure apple not choose uncommon resolution , going change aspect ratio. apple wants make things easy developers , if @ ipad 3 not going change that. apple went 2048 1536 resolution ipad 3: have gone in between old , new resolution, mean troubles developers.
thus, apple has shown not settling 'in-between' solution. it's going 960 640, or in best-case scenario 1920 1280 resolution (but unlikely).
so, apple going according me?
if apple going increase display size, settling 4.37"~ display (give or take few 0.01 inches). if keep same 960 640 resolution, it's going have 264 pixels per inch.
, why think going settle 4.37 inch display:
- existing infrastructure
think it: samsung, sharp , lg producing 264 pixels per inch displays apple (for ipad 3). cost little money produce smaller displays.
switching pixel density expensive. if @ list gave earlier, 4.37 inch logical decision apple: saves money. expensive change existing production line new displays different pixel densities can produced.
so: of apple's suppliers can produce 264 ppi-displays in huge quantities right now. switching pixel density expensive , takes time switch pixel density.
bonus example:
john gruber has indicated apple indeed testing 7.85" ipads resolution of 1024 768 pixels per inch. let's assume correct, can tell why have choosen size of 7.85":
7.85 inch display 1024 768 resolution result in pixel density of 163 pixels per inch. happens apple has 'set up' 163-ppi-display-line: producing displays 163 pixels per inch iphone 3gs. thus, logical decision apple settle new 163 ppi display.
- size
not infrastructure exists, it's size coming years. apple known creating amazing designs , put 4.37" display in iphone without dramatically increasing physical dimensions. it's not small, it's not big.
- 'retina display'?
well, apple says iphone 4s retina display when hold 12 inches away eye. hear asking, when 4.3" 960 640 display 'retina-worthy'? well, when hold @ 13 inches eye!
so, hear thinking: "apple said can't distinguish pixels on iphone when hold 12 inches away (the common holding distance). must hold 4.37" iphone 13 inches away..."
that's correct, apple argue user holds iphone 1 inch further away because display bigger.
iphone 4.37" 960 640 display retina display when hold away 13 inches.
iphone 4s 960 640 display retina display when hold away 12 inches.
and if settle 1920 1280 resolution on 4.37" display?
well, great.
first of all, there won't discussion whether or not retina display. retina display because have pixel density of 528 pixels per inch.
second of all, allow apple introduce 4k ipad display somewhere in coming years (the industry moving forward 4k resolution in coming years).
likely? nope.
so, if apple not settle 4.37" display
illogical. cost them lot , production slow @ first. smartest move use display pixel density suppliers can produce.
if don't settle 4.37" display, size used.
conclusion
wise thing apple go 4.37" display: infrastructure there no problems supply, doesn't cost money , it's safe choice coming years: not big, not small.
but iphone held closer ipad. can't go down way 264 ppi. thinking stop @ 4" reason , out of respect steve jobs said people didn't want big screen phones.
