iPad Docks and Sound

hello all,

thinking grabbing basic ipad dock; don't want speaker-set dock, stand while charging - however, want listen audiobooks\podcasts.

speaker placement, can owns official apple dock or that's shaped bit similar 'the stump' let me know if sounds muffled @ all, having ipad2 in portrait position , standing in dock?

speaker pointed down, isn't covered plastic base, think sound okay...
