How to run ePSXe on a Mac without installing windows.


i editing thread because have tried , tested answer! enjoy!

how epsxe running on osx natively(ish)

there 3 ways run windows-only emulator epsxe on apple computer.

1. install windows in bootcamp - gives better frame rates if computer having trouble , can work around few osx glitches.
2. virtualize windows in osx - parallels , vmware fusion should fine here. virtualbox still has problem usb devices being passed guests.
3. run epsxe wrapper - wineskin easiest free way this. creates fake windows environment each windows app, allowing run within osx without copy of windows.

covering wineskin method.

first, need fetch wineskin winery.

download app , drag application folder.

when first launch application, not have needs create proper wrapper, instead allow fetch latest stuff within app. how thoughtful.

click plus sign , download , install ws9wine1.5.8 engine. (1.5.9 latest of post, appears have problems recognizing available screen resolutions.)
edit: overlooked important when wrote this. apple bad writing drivers, in particular drivers amd/ati gpus. if blessed 1 of these, running latest wrapper bad idea. end rendered in software rather hardware, slow. there used workaround in wine 1.4.x days, holding developers back, in 1.5.1, removed. using wine engine based on 1.4 should fix this. there patched engine, "ws9wine1.5.12 amdspeedhack" lets latest version build use hardware acceleration, supposedly causes trouble glsl shaders."


next, notice "no wrapper installed" text. click update install newest wrapper.
edit: avoid 2.5.5 if running mountain lion. wrapper 2.5.6 stable, , fixed nightmares can occur when using mountain lion.

click "create new blank wrapper" , name whatever want. name of app, makes sense call "epsxe."

if firewall active, mac osx ask if let new wrapper connect internet. epsxe doesn't need that, deny it. also, cancel mono , gecko installers when asks because epsxe doesn't use anyway.

have nice new wrapper! go ahead , exit out of wineskin winery. done it.

now, need put emulator inside wrapper. when have installer, easy, epsxe doesn't use installer, have manually.

first, fetch epsxe. use latest version (1.7.0).

unzip file if osx didn't you. should see folder called "epsxe170" , bunch of little things inside. download , place whatever plugins want in plugins folder (eternal 1.41 , 1.50 great sound plugins, , peops ogl plugins nice too.) place playstation 1 bios dump in bios folder. (i not find one, , technically, need own playstation 1 legally permitted have file.)

epsxe has unspecified need file called zlib1.dll. download , place in epsxe170 folder.

now, need move epsxe folder wrapper. try launch epsxe wrapper created wineskin winery earlier. when asked, select "install software."

have manually because epsxe has no installer, wineskin makes pretty easy too. click on "move folder inside." choose epsxe170 folder. automatically find , assume want use epsxe.exe file when launch program. correct. click ok.

funsies, let's give version number , pretty icon. optional, simple might it. click advanced button once initial window comes up. change version "1.7.0" , icon, browse nice new one, 1 in link:

remember, want icns file, not png or ico file. click browse , select pretty new icon, close window red circle in upper left corner.

crush annoying bug. affect ati gpu owners. i'm not sure if matter intel or nvidia users. please let me know if have 1 of these cards , can test this. there black bar across top (or bottom, depending on resolution settings) obscures part of image. fix this, hold option , try launch epsxe wrapper. click "set screen options" , uncheck "decorate windows." fix black borders, make epsxe windows application again. oh well, of time spent in fullscreen mode anyway.

make sure have controller plugged mac before launch epsxe (so see it) , not disconnect until after exit epsxe (or crash it.) can use playstation-to-usb adaptors on mac fine, haptic feedback (vibration) not work. sadly, macosx doesn't know is, can't pass instruction along controller.

setup same pc @ point. let me know if have questions.

in example, set play xenogears. games, megaman x games, need further tweaks, similar pc settings.

edit: check attached images section revised gpu settings (no more missing dialog borders or botched compasses!) not working great xenogears, using 4xglslhqfilter shader program, megaman x games not terrible at!

know, emulating xenogears on pc difficult enough. use of wine adds layer of complexity. i'm hoping doesn't involve "use bootcamp" bear me.

i'm running epsxe 1.7.0 in mac osx 10.7.3 via wineskin. (by way, how awesome wineskin? :)) suspect last 4 issues caused osx, there should way work around them winetricks, right?

- white borders missing. starts happening in lahan when fei finishes painting. before then, fine. (edit: using 1.4.1 engine , revised gpu setting below fixed that)

- in fullscreen mode, top cut off, can't see of make adjustments because fps bar offscreen.

- in fullscreen @ 720p, there black bar on bottom. seems drawing area moved up, cutting off of top.

- in fullscreen @ 1080p, bottom cut off. absence of black bars tells me y resolution setting being exceeded. (edit: 1080p has same problem 720p. hmmmm)
