Can I upgrade?

hi,

have iphone 4s bought @ full price apple store in us. @ time of activation did gave message of being unlocked.

currently, out of us, can update 5.1? again ask at&t sim?.

not want stuck, hence being bit cautious.

please advise

 

if purchased unlocked iphone outright apple store permanently unlocked , stay unlocked. plug phone in , update it, there no harm in doing so.
