Need a little help with backing up, sort of urgent

hi, imac's hard drive failing, picked external hard drive (500gb) , getting ready os , applications.

i've dl'd carbon copy cloner , i'm ready start, i'm wondering if should partition new drive. use drive short term storage , transferring/working on files on multiple computers.

i'm not sure can ask questions properly, please bear me... think i'm having little trouble understanding way partitioning , ups work. can make regular separate ups of data and/or application changes/preference changes? reason partition drive?

should use ccc or time capsule regular backups?

in advance help.

there no such thing "regular backup" - backup how want to. can partition drive , ccc (or tm) backup on 1 partition , use other short-term storage.

what "just data" mean? isn't "data" ? tm default , ccc selecting proper option backup changes file has been changed since last backup, if that's mean. ccc means have full-disk backup first gets baseline.
