hello all! purchased first mac in august 2011. refurbished 2011 27" model came i5-2400 processor, standard 4gb of ram, 1tb platter drive, , radeon hd 6970m graphics. day received it, upgraded ram 16gb, , added 120gb vertex 3 sata3 ssd 2 60gb partitions osx , bootcamp.
weekend bit bullet , ordered i7-2600k processor little more performance out of it. ordered arctic silver 5 new processor, still hasn't been delivered, ended picking cheap silver thermal paste local pc repair shop. tear down went smoothly, when uncapped thermal paste , tried squeeze out on clean heatsink, got watery mess paste liquid had separated rest of compound (kind of liquid collects on ketchup, squeeze jelly, or peanut butter). wiped off , started again clean paste. got new processor in , went reassembling computer. caught in excitement of new addition, wasn't careful should have been, , ended snapping capacitor off while re-installing main board.
judging location, believe had smc functions on board. here's look:
since connection pretty darn small, figured board have replaced if no longer worked. proceeded patch things , tried firing up. booted slight delay attributed hardware change.
first thing noticed cpu fan gradually raise, settle down. opened istat check out temps. after 10 minutes or so, appeared stable, cpu hovering between 27 , 30 c @ idle. cpu fan continued surge slowly, going between 900 , 1800rpm every 30 seconds or so. nothing concerning, gentle ocean waves, haha. after running benchmarks , prime95, temps averaged highs around 65 c, peak of 74 c while prime running 8 threads.
when booted win 7, temps seemed bit warmer osx. machine idles around 40 c, , stays steady around 74 c when running bf3 @ max settings. concern arises when run prime95. test starts, temps start climb, , continue way 90+ if don't stop test.
things considered, i'd came out pretty lucky, still pursue fixing these issues. i'll try re-installing heat sink arctic silver when arrives , see if temps drop down bit. temps still bother me in windows, though haven't seen them high under synthetic benchmarks. fan pick , stay steady around 2000rpm when temps above ~60 c, believe still working correctly. have educated guess purpose of capacitor or how new mb costs? sorry long winded, didn't want leave speculation , invite impractical responses. in advance.

virtually capacitors in digital circuits "bypass" capacitors filter high frequency noise on power busses. there more needed required operation. knocking off capacitor not problem. sounds thermal me don't know if bad thermal paste or greater power consumption of new processor (very bad if -- computer designed dissipate power consumed oem processor.) new logic boards outrageously expensive, imho replacement means it's best buy new computer.
else can chime in more detail. i'm electrical engineer , designed computers in past, i've never opened of imac.
