Can't do anything with disk utility - everything is grayed out

i'm not sure caused this, i'm on osx lion on 2011 mbp , of sudden can't disk utility. mean anything. can't repair disk permissions, repair disk, partition, format, or erase disk, including external drives. have lion partition on second hard drive not have issue. both recovery partitions not have issue. can still use workaround, it's less ideal. should do?
