USB External Sound Card?

is still using these? provide advantage in sound quality?

i'm considering buying 11" air , thunderbolt display soon, , i'd use logitech 5500s. aside optical issue (it's understanding there adapter allows plug macbook , surround sound) main gripe tbd has no audio ports. kind of takes of magic out of concept me, if have plug in/unplug more cables air when dock , undock it.

i'm wondering if external usb sound card leave plugged in might solution. have modern experience this? used have 1 6-7 years ago , seemed work alright, see them anymore.

ideally i'd allowed me use optical.

i've tried searching these while ago, gave of them required drivers windows (ie. creative ones). in end bought fiio amp headphones sounds great. if you're ever interested, unit bought:
