Can I use my own effects pedals with GarageBand?

hi.

i'm recording song in garageband , going amp mods , in built stop boxes. however, want use digitech whammy decent octave down sound (non of in built effects have far can see) when try , plug in don't signal @ all.

there way working? i'm using jack mini jack converter (like this) , don't have cash buy audio interface. id doable or there decent pitch shifter plug ins available?

i don't use garageband, reason, signal path is:
bass ---> fx ---> built-in audio input.
works fine.

use mini jack 1/4" jack lead. mini jack in imac, 1/4" in last fx pedal. way reduced strain on input socket on imac.
this sort of thing
