USB connexion does nothing at all

since upgrading itunes 10.6 (and 10.6.1) iphone nothing @ when connected usb cable (no matter usb port try on imac - running 10.7.3).

phone doesn't recognise it's plugged in either, , doesn't charge. no error messages in console, nothing show imac knows there's plugged usb port. worked fine last time did usb sync last month.

i've tried deleting applemobiledevice.kext file , reinstalling itunes, hasn't helped. suggestions?

(note: phone charges fine mains adaptor, either of usb cables - neither of them @ on imac.)

have checked see if other usb devices recognised correctly? example, usb mouse or keyboard?

have ipod available? - if connect this, itunes recognise , mount it?

if itunes/mac os recognises other devices, try resetting iphone.
